Week Three

Weekly Objectives: A majority of this week is dedicated to ordering the parts that we will need, and waiting for them to get here. While we wait for this, we are going to refine the design of the housing and also the electrical system as much as possible. Along with this, we are also going to try to schedule a meeting with someone in the Fashion Design program to being talking with them about our jacket design. What was accomplished: The fans The fans that we had ordered to use for this project had arrived this week. During the lab period, we decided to test them to make sure their motors would produce enough voltage to charge any phone. We know that we would need a voltage of 5 volt and an amperage of 1amp to charge a phone in what would be considered a "normal time." [1] Unfortunately when testing the motors, we found that they would only produce around 0.1V. even if we used four of these fan's motors, they could only produce around 0.4V, which is not enough to ...

Weekly Objectives:  This week, we wanted to begin designing the different parts that we would need for this project. This not only included CAD designing the fan assembly, and making a circuit diagram of the electronic components, but also figuring out what parts and materials would need to be bought, and what could be found and used from Drexel. What we Accomplished: This week, we were able to mainly cover some of the main design focuses of our project. Zen was able to CAD and model the custom fans and housing for them using Creo 3.0, and Manpreet was able to draw a circuit diagram for our system, and figure out the electronic components that would need to be ordered. A picture of the Creo assembly for our design can be seen in figure 1 and the circuit diagram can be seen in figure 2. Figure 1: Creo Assembly of Fans and Housing The final design idea for the turbine and housing assembly was to have the air be channeled through the top of the assembly and ...

Weekly Objectives: Our main objectives for this week were to first find an idea that suited not only the requirements of the project, but also an idea that would take full advantage of the skills that each member has to offer. After this, our goal was to create a plan as to how we would progress with the project, and begin researching all of the projects' and our idea's specifications. What we accomplished: As a group, we talked over many different project topics, however in the end, we were able to reach a solid conclusion: that we would be designing and building an alternative-energy, portable phone charger. Once we reached this, we then had to discuss what kind of alternative energy we wanted to use. We decided to design something around harnessing wind to create electrical energy, as wind is one of the more abundant resources available for power generation that can be made in a small form factor. After the main decisions were made, we reached the conclusion that we ...
