Design Overview

The Problem we want to solve:

We want to create an alternative energy portable phone charging device. The device we are looking to create will mainly used by those who commute by walking, skateboarding, or bicycling to where ever they need to since these are the forms of transportation where charging ones phone is the most difficult. We also want to make the device so that it is not affixed to whatever mode of transportation one may be using. So if one day one might want to walk, or one day one might want to bicycle, their phone charging capabilities are not restricted by mode of transportation. On top of all of these requirements, we want it to be able to charge in most kinds of weather.

To summarize the points attributes that we want our device to have, we want it to be:
  • Portable
  • Usable in most weather
  • Light
  • Usable on multiple types of transport
  • Efficiently charge a conventional 5V 1A phone

How we plan to solve it:

We are going to make a jacket that will channel air that flows past the body while in motion, into a pack of four fans on the back of the jacket. The fans will be used as turbines for generating the energy needed to charge a phone. A more detailed explanation of the design of our solution can be found in Week One's blog post.
