Week Two

Weekly Objectives:

This week, we wanted to begin designing the different parts that we would need for this project. This not only included CAD designing the fan assembly, and making a circuit diagram of the electronic components, but also figuring out what parts and materials would need to be bought, and what could be found and used from Drexel.

What we Accomplished:

This week, we were able to mainly cover some of the main design focuses of our project. Zen was able to CAD and model the custom fans and housing for them using Creo 3.0, and Manpreet was able to draw a circuit diagram for our system, and figure out the electronic components that would need to be ordered. A picture of the Creo assembly for our design can be seen in figure 1 and the circuit diagram can be seen in figure 2.

Figure 1: Creo Assembly of Fans and Housing

The final design idea for the turbine and housing assembly was to have the air be channeled through the top of the assembly and past four custom fans and out of the bottom. We are going to print the four fans out using the Afinia 3D printers located in the Innovation Studio. We are still unsure of what the housing will be made of. We are leaning toward using a Handibot CNC router to route the shape out of a piece of high density polyurethane (HDPE). This material is not only strong, but can also be easily machined, and is relatively inexpensive compared to other plastic materials.

We were also able to look into who we are going to contact to aid us in designing and constructing the jacket. After research, we figure that we are going to contact the head of the Fashion Design department, and see where they may be able to direct us. Anchit and Justin will be drafting an email, and figuring out when and how we well pursue the jacket.
